This book provides psychotherapists with a multidimensional view of childhood neglect and a practical roadmap for facilitating survivors’ healing.

Working from a strong base in attachment theory, esteemed clinician Ruth Cohn explores ways therapists can recognize the signs of childhood neglect, provides recommendations for understanding lasting effects that can persist into adulthood, and lays out strategies for helping clients maximize therapeutic outcomes. Along with extensive clinical material, chapters introduce skills that therapists can develop and hone, such as the ability to recognize and discern non-verbal attempts at communication. They also provide an array of resources and evidence-based treatment modalities that therapists can use in session.

Working with the Developmental Trauma of Childhood Neglect is an essential book for any mental health professional working with survivors of childhood trauma.

As an adult now intellectually aware that I'm a product of intergenerational complex PTSD, it was Alice Miller who led me to Ruth Cohn's book which added depth and direction for me. Not being a clinician, I still could not put the book down and highlighted the essential points that apply to a client's growth. If I engaged a therapist where I live, a Ruth Cohn would be what I'd want. Two challenges to the text are (1) the failure to clean up the punctuation, and (2) the author's sentence structure often begins with a clause leaving me hanging out there in wait of the subject and verb to get to the point. Perhaps we have different levels of comprehension, but the knowledge is there even if I need to read a sentence or two a couple times. I truly value this informative book, and will come back to it as I journal and digest Pete Walker's book which is better directed in layman's terms towards my needs to both intellectually and emotionally understand and approach my situation.
